Section 7: Connections

Your device includes features to connect to the internet and to other devices, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that provides access to local area networks.

Use your device’s Wi-Fi to:

  • Access the internet for browsing, or to send or receive email.
  • Access your corporate network.
  • Use hotspots provided by hotels or airports while traveling. Wi-Fi communication requires access to an existing Wireless Access Point (WAP).  WAPs can be Open (unsecured, as with most hotspots), or Secure (requiring you to provide login credentials). Your device supports the 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi protocol.

 

Finding Wi-Fi Networks

You can have your device automatically notify you of available networks.

 

Configuring Wi-Fi Settings

Turning Wi-Fi On or Off

Turn your device’s Wi-Fi service on or off. When you turn Wi-Fi service on, your device automatically

searches for available, in-range WAPs (Wireless Access Points).

1. From any screen, sweep your finger downward from the top to display the Notification Panel.

Scanning and Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network

 

When you turn on Wi-Fi, your device searches for available Wi-Fi connections, then displays them on screen.

1. From any screen, sweep your finger downward from the top to display the Notification Panel.

2. Touch Wi-Fi to turn Wi-Fi On. Your device automatically scans for available Wireless Access Points.

3. When the scan is complete, touch a Wi-Fi network to connect. If the Wi-Fi network is open, your device

will automatically connect. If the Wi-Fi network is secured, enter the password at the prompt to connect.

 

Adding a Wi-Fi Network Manually

1. From a Home screen, press the Menu Key→ Settings Wireless and network Wi-Fi settings.

2. Touch Wi-Fi to turn Wi-Fi On.

3. Touch Add Wi-Fi network, then enter information about the network:

  • Network SSID: Enter the name of the Wi-Fi Wireless Access Point.
  • Security: Select the type of security used by the WAP.
  • Password: If the WAP is secured, enter the password or hex key.

4. Touch Save to save the settings.

 

Note: Depending on the Security protocol used by the WAP, additional network information may be required.

 

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communications technology for exchanging information over a distance of about 30 feet. You don’t need to line up the devices to send information with Bluetooth. If the devices are in range, you can exchange information between them, even if they are in different rooms.

 

Configuring Bluetooth Settings

Turning Bluetooth On or Off

1. From any screen, sweep your finger downward from the top to display the Notification Panel.

2. Touch Bluetooth to turn Bluetooth on.

Note: When Bluetooth is on, the Bluetooth icon displays in the Status Bar.

 

Turning Bluetooth Off

1. From any screen, sweep your finger downward from the top to display the Notification Panel.

2. Touch Bluetooth to turn Bluetooth off.

Search for a Bluetooth device and pair with it, to exchange information between your device and the target

device.

1. From a Home screen, press the Menu Key Settings Wireless and network Bluetooth settings.

2. Touch Bluetooth to turn on Bluetooth.

3. Enable the target device’s discoverable, or visible mode.

4. Touch Scan devices.

5. From the list of scanned devices, touch the target device, then follow the prompts to complete the pairing:

• If the target device requires a PIN, enter a PIN for the target device and touch OK. When prompted, enter the

Pairing with a Bluetooth Device PIN on the target device.

Tip: After pairing, your device and the target device will recognize each other and exchange information

without having to enter a passcode or PIN.

•If the device allows automatic or smart pairing, your device will attempt to pair with the device automatically.

 

 

VPN

Adding a VPN

1. From a Home screen, press the Menu Key Settings Wireless and network VPN settings.

2. Touch Add VPN to set up a connection to a VPN, using the following settings:

  • Add PPTP VPN: Set up a connection to a VPN with Point-to-Point tunneling protocol.
  • Add L2TP VPN: Set up a connection to a VPN with Layer 2 tunneling protocol.
  • Add L2TP/IPSec PSK VPN: Set up a connection to a VPN with pre-shared key-based Layer 2/IPsec
  • tunneling protocol.
  • Add L2TP/IPSec CRT VPN: Set up a connection to a VPN with Certificate-based Layer 2/IPsec
  • tunneling protocol.

Configure USB Settings to automatically identify your device when you attach it to a computer with a USB cable.

 

Memory Card

Installing and Removing a Memory Card

Formatting a Memory Card

Your device supports removable microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory cards for storage of music, pictures, videos, and files.

Formatting erases all content from the memory card and prepares it for use with your device.

Formatting a memory card using your device

1. From a Home screen, press the Menu Key→ Settings→  SD card and device storage

2. Touch Unmount SD card. At the prompt, touch OK to continue.

3. After unmounting the SD card, touch Format SD card.

4. Follow the prompts to confirm the formatting of the card.

Important!: To prevent damage to information stored on the memory card, always unmount the card before

removing it from the device.

Note: Your device comes with a USB cable, and includes 4GB internal memory card.

 

Formatting a memory card using your desktop or laptop computer

Consult your computer and/or memory card reader documentation for information about formatting

memory cards.

 

Transferring Files to a Memory Card

Transferring files using the Media player USB setting

1. From a Home screen, press the Menu Key→  Settings → Wireless and network USB Settings, then select Media player.

2. Attach your device to the computer with the USB cable. Your computer recognizes the connection

and launches the default media player.

3. Use the media player software to transfer files to the memory card.

4. When finished, display the Notifications Panel to disconnect media sync mode. Touch Media

Sync: Connected, then touch Yes to disconnect. Disconnect the USB cable.

 

Transferring files using the USB cable

Note: Your device comes with a USB cable.

 

1. Attach your device to the computer with a USB cable connected to the Mini-USB plug on the tablet and a regular USB plug on the computer.
Your device recognizes the connection and displays USB connected in the Status Bar and Notifications Panel.

2. Touch Turn On USB Storage.

3. At the prompt on the computer, select a transfer method:

•Open device to view files using Windows Explorer. Drag and drop files from the PC to the memory card

4. Transfer files to the memory card. When finished, touch Turn Off USB Storage, wait a few moments, and

disconnect the USB cable.
